Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

The ultimate purpose of all language is communication and our aim in the early years of learning a foreign language is to generate enthusiasm, enjoyment and to give the children the confidence to persevere. Aspects of French and European studies are included whenever appropriate in the term's topics of all the year groups. Activities including speaking, listening, reading and writing to provide experiences as authentic as possible which will develop the pupil's ability to communicate with native speakers, in a range of defined situations. Use of songs, vocabulary in classroom e.g. date, is encouraged so it becomes a familiar part of their day. As part of our residential programme, Year 6 children have a week in France where they have the opportunity to use their language skills. In addition we are involved in an Erasmus project that is promoting the children's knowledge and understanding of the customs of those in five other European countries.
